There’s nowhere quite like Central London in the summer, with sunlight bouncing off historic façades, ice-cold cocktails counteracting the heat, and long evenings with friends becoming mandatory. And while we love the buzz of it all, it’s sometimes necessary to find somewhere with a little shade, a slower pace and enough distance from the crowds to properly switch off for an hour or two.
Fortunately, St James’s is full of quiet corners that reward those willing to wander slightly off the main road. Allow us to introduce you…
St James’s Park
Now we know this one may not exactly be hidden, but hear us out…
In a part of London known for its fast pace, St James’s Park offers space to breathe - a vast stretch of greenery that acts as a breath of fresh air in the heart of the city. Beyond the famous lake and flower-lined paths, you’ll find Duck Island, a wildlife sanctuary with its own quaint cottage, famous resident pelicans and an undeniable aura of calm.
Once you’ve enjoyed the views or whiled away the hours with a good book from Hatchards, may we suggest a martini at DUKES Bar (home of the original 007 martini, no less) as a very sensible next step?
St James’s Square
Tucked behind the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly and Jermyn Street, St James’s Square feels separate from the noise of the West End, and on sunny afternoons, it becomes one of the neighbourhood’s best picnic spots.
One of the joys of the Square is that it’s so wonderfully close to your favourite haunts - so grab yourself an iced coffee from Bija, enjoy a leisurely browse at Favourbrook, or visit nearby Iconic Images Gallery to complete the perfect day.
Pickering Place
Pickering Place is London’s smallest square, flanked by Georgian architecture and original features dating back to the 18th century. Its secluded nature meant that it earned a reputation as a location for gambling and duels in its early days, though today it’s best known as a quiet spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital city.
Berry Bros & Rudd backs onto Pickering Place, so pick up a bottle of your favourite vino before wandering over to Milos for some supper in the sunshine.
