Where to staycation this season, with @London

When you think of London, iconic landmarks, world-renowned entertainment and a buzzing cultural scene come to mind. But, after a packed staycation in the capital city, where to lay your head when the day comes to a close?

To answer the question, we enlisted a seasoned expert who knows the city's top spots better than perhaps any other - David Burt (@MrLondon), behind the famed Instagram account @LONDON. Read on for his selection of the best hotels in St James’s, plus a few insider tips along the way.

The Stafford London

A historic establishment just off St James’s Place, this classic hotel spans multiple Victorian buildings, including the three-floor private Gatehouse Suite.

David particularly recommends a contemporary European dinner at MICHAEL CAINES, the first ever London residency of Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines. To follow it up, he suggests a visit to The American Bar which is tucked away within the hotel's secluded courtyard.

Sofitel London St James Hotel

Located in Waterloo Place, Sofitel London St James pairs grand architecture with chic French flair. Not only does it have a Michelin-starred restaurant on site (Wild Honey) - you can also escape the city's hustle and bustle in its award-winning spa.

St James's Bar is another of David's favourite spots - in fact, it was featured in @LONDON's guide to London Cocktail Week - so settle down for the evening here with a handcrafted, theatre-inspired tipple or a vintage spirit.

Haymarket Hotel

Haymarket Hotel (and its two Michelin keys) is nestled within the theatre district, with Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, and St James’s Park all within easy reach. Amenities and entertainment include a pool and regular Thursday jazz nights in Brumus Bar. 

David names it as a top spot for afternoon tea in a classy setting, as well as the keenly priced pre-theatre menu at £34pp for 3 courses.

How to spend a weekend

With a couple of days to enjoy the delights of St James's, David would start by exploring Jermyn Street, calling in at Floris to peruse their selection of fragrances (including the scents once worn by the likes of Winston Churchill and Oscar Wilde), before making his way down to Emma Willis, the shirt-making extraordinaire.

No visit to St James's is complete without stopping by the institution that is Berry Bros. and Rudd, who have been supplying fine wines and spirits to Londoners since 1698. A top tip if you're looking to treat someone special in your life - their Armagnac collection can be purchased with corresponding years, making it the perfect birthday present for those looking to celebrate a particular year.

When it comes to food, St James's isn't short of excellent culinary establishments, but you'll find David enjoying a relaxing lunch on the terrace at Franco's (the lobster linguine and their twist on a New York sour are not to be missed). For dinner, book a table at FOWL in St James's Market - their menu of chicken dishes are sure to have you crowing!
